Exam Information

To be able to pass the A2 state exam in May, one needs between 8-12 months of lessons, depending on the type of lessons.  There are various paths to achieve this and all different paths reflect differences in learning preferences, availability and cost.  

The most common path is Group courses.  All our Group courses last 45 hours (two lessons of 1.5 hours spread over 15 weeks) and are designed in such a way that a student needs to take three (3) group courses to be ready for the A2 exam (A1, A2.1, and A2.2).  As you can see, while the A1 course is taken over one term, the A2 course is split into A2.1 and A2.2 since it entails more content and thus requires more time.  This path takes a calendar year to complete.  For example, if you start in June (summer A1 course), then you complete the A1 by September, you do the A2.1 during the Fall term (September-January), and you take the A2.2 course in the Spring term (February-May).  This means that you are ready for the May exam in good time.  

Another path is to take private lessons.  People need to do roughly 2-3 lessons a week for around 8 months to reach the A2 level (depending on how quickly one absorbs the material).   So, one can start in September and with 2-3 private lessons be ready for the May exam.  The advantage of private lessons versus group lessons is that the former can be adjusted to your schedule, you learn at your own pace, and can be a great option for people who are in a haste to pass the exam.  They are, however, a less cost-effective option.  

One last path is to do combination of group and private lessons.  For example, if you want to pass the A2 exam in May and you are ready to start lessons in September of the previous year (so you only have around 8 months to get ready), then you can start with the A1 group course in September, complete it by January, and then from January till May, you can do 2-3 private lessons a week.  This path will allow you to be ready in time for the May exam and although not the most economical path, it still reduces the overall cost.
